Maria Pilar Canedo Arrillaga, commissioner of the Spanish national markets and competition commission, spoke about the competition policy and the current challenges in this direction at the first international conference on Competition and Consumer Protection held in Georgia.

According to her, it is necessary to maintain a balance in the enforcement of the law to create a competitive environment for companies and, at the same time, not hinder their development.

"The competition agency should be able to control the cartel agreements between the big players and use the necessary regulations for this. However, such interventions should be carefully weighed," Arrillaga said.

Arrillaga stated in the interview that the market should be open and information available to everyone. There should be no barriers and state-privileged businesses. Consumers should be protected by the law.

"In the US, the law leans towards the business, while in Europe, on the contrary. Georgia inclines towards the European standard," said the commissioner.

For information, On November 16-17, the first international conference on the enforcement of competition policy and protection of consumer rights was held in Georgia. In addition to the government and parliamentary team, diplomatic corps, friendly countries, representatives of business, non-governmental and academic sectors, and specialists in the field, the delegation of 20 countries participated in the conference.
